03 Rare Speed Gene in Militarize's Pedigree

Updated: Feb 6

Uncovering the most exceptional blood in this industry and understanding how to access it is a constant debate that never leaves most thoroughbred breeders' minds.

Militarize's jaw-dropping finish to get up and win the G1 Golden Rose Stakes was unforgettable, and his performance suggests that the blood in his veins must be filled with something potent.

By the stallion Dundeel and out of the non-winning English-bred Dubawi mare Amerindia, Militarize's 2nd dam is by the stallion Muhtathir, who carries the blood of Diesis.

This gives Militarize line breeding to the full brothers Kris and Diesis.

The blood of Diesis is scarce in the Southern Hemisphere. However, his full brother, Kris, is the sire of High Chaparral's 2nd dam Kozana, ( Kris is also in I Am Invincible.)

Diesis was the two-year-old champion in England in 1980, winning the G1 Middle Park Stakes and the G1 Dewhurst Stakes.

Kris was unbeaten in four starts as a two-year-old and won the G1 Sussex Stakes and St James Palace Stakes.

There is a third full brother, a horse called Keen. G2 placed, he ran 5th at G1 level.

Other close relatives are two stallions that stood in New Zealand during the 1970's, Sucaryl and Sugar Apple, their dam Sweet Angel being the third dam of Kris, Diesis, and Keen.

Doubling up to this beautiful blood has produced horses at the highest level in the Northern Hemisphere on multiple occasions. It doesn't happen that frequently in the Southern Hemisphere, but when it does, it has produced some smart horses.

The following video explains the patterns in the family tree of some of those outstanding horses.

How do mare owners tap into this blood?

The following video is of a planned mating at Milan Park, Cambridge, New Zealand, with the mare Can I Get An Amen and the stallion Dundeel.

The mare was chosen as being a highly suitable match for Dundeel.

The video explains how to go about planning the mating, doubling up to certain families

(including that of Kris and Sugar Apple) and in the positions where they appear in the tree hoping the desired bloodlines come through in the resulting foal.

Mare Pedigree Patterns.

There is an abundance of mares about especially in New Zealand carrying combinations of O'Reilly and Pins.

These mares mix well with the blood of Redoute's Choice, through his sons Snitzel and Not A Single Doubt.

The O'Reilly connection.

O'Reilly's grand-sire Try My Best has the same two female families as Redoute's Choice:

Best in Show and Natalma.

This is the famous Redoute's Choice-Last Tycoon 'nick' in action.

The Pins connection.

Pin's sire Snippets is the damsire of Snitzel.

Snippets' dam Easy Date, is also the second dam of Not A Single Doubt.

You can view examples of these patterns in the gallery below:
